Truly the most open of all lifestyle choices, pansexuality offers an opportunity to love without limits. Even though it is difficult to identify why we feel certain ways, or choose certain attributes as being most attractive, most of us still define our sexuality with clear rules and boundaries.
People choose among many common dichotomies, including: for men or women, gay or straight, black or white. Without knowing why, we choose certain kind of people, often by something as seemingly arbitrary as hair color.
History of Pansexuality
The concept of pansexuality goes back to Freud, and has changed over time. Originally tied to sex, the definition has grown to include gender identity and even gender expression. Most recently, a large number of millennial youth have identified as pansexuals, including some famous people. Most notably, Miley Cyrus who came out as pansexual in a 2016 Variety interview, where she explained that “bisexual” was too confining a term. She knew from a young age that she was most attracted to individuals who combined characteristics from both traditional sex stereotypes.
Who is Pansexual?
According to some researchers, women are five times as likely as men to identify as pansexual. Also more likely to identify as pansexual are young people who are not heterosexual, and individuals who have what society considers a nontraditional gender role or expression.
As more and more people identify with the concept, there is an attempt to define what pansexuality entails. Even some who identify as strictly gay or straight also identify as pansexual, stressing that the key to attraction is personality.
The bottom line is that we need to do what makes us happy. As long as we are living the kind of life which is mentally healthy and emotionally fulfilling, the need to follow arbitrary rules only leads to guilt and regret.
